If you thought 4G was cool, think again. South Korea, one of the most wired countries on earth, already has around 20 million 4G users, and now Samsung has managed to successfully test fifth-generation (5G) wireless technology.
This super-fast technology allows users to download a movie in a matter of a second. The test used 64 antenna elements, which they said overcame unfavourable propagation characteristics. These characteristics have previously prevented data travelling across long distances. Samsung’s test concluded data transmissions of more than a gigabyte per second over a two kilometre distance.
Despite the exciting news, the new technology will not be ready to hit the commercial market before 2020. Samsung said that it would offer transmitting speeds of ‘up to seven hundred times faster’ than 4G networks. This means that users will be able to experience a range of services such as 3D movies and games, real-time streaming of ultra high-definition (UHD) content, and remote medical services without any limits. This surely proves worth the entire wait.
